Frequently Asked Questions - Animal Services

Does Salt Lake County Animal Services provide services in my city?
Salt Lake County Animal Services serves the residents and pets of Unincorporated Salt Lake County, Salt Lake City, Herriman, Cottonwood Heights, and Taylorsville.
Why do I need to license my dog/cat/ferret?
It is your legal responsibility as a pet owner.  Call (801) 269-7402 to license your pet or if you have questions.
How many dogs or cats can I own legally?
Two adult dogs and two adult cats can reside at the same address in most jurisdictions.  If you have questions on the total number, contact your local zoning office.
What can I do about stray cats on my property?
If you can contain the cat in a box or carrier, call (801) 743-7045 for an officer to pick it up.  If the cat is too wild (feral), get a cat trap from the shelter.  There is a refundable $50 cash-only deposit for the trap.
What do I do if I find a stray animal running loose?
In order for the animal's owner to have the best chance of finding their pet, it should be taken to the appropriate shelter.  The appropriate shelter is based on where the animal was found.  It is also a violation of animal control ordinances to harbor a stray.  If someone finds a stray, they must contact Animal Services within 24 hours at (801) 269-7499.
What do I do if I find injured wildlife or need to report wildlife wandering in my neighborhood?
Call the Utah Division of Wildlife Services at (801) 538-4700 or Federal Wildlife Protection at (801) 975-3307.
I have lost my pet. What should I do?
Visit the shelter within 24 hours and then every other day.  Visit our website and click on Lost Pets for more information and to see animals in the shelter online.
I want to adopt a pet. How do I do this?

It is after regular business hours and I have an emergency with an animal. Who can I contact?
